La Biennale di Venezia 2017 – Viva Arte Viva

The 57th International Art Exhibition, titled VIVA ARTE VIVA, organized by La Biennale di Venezia, is taking place in Venice from 13th of May to 26th of November 2017.

This year, the contemporary art exhibition displays art pieces, inspired by humanism. It reflects everything world collides nowadays: conflicts, wars and fears, and yet, shows prospects, freedom, fundamental values and the positive approach in life. Viva Arte Viva is structured as a book with nine chapters. Starting with two introducing sections in the Central Pavilion: the Pavilion of Artists and Books  and the Pavilion of Joys and Fears, followed by another seven across the Arsenale: the Pavilion of the Common, the Pavilion of the Earth, the Pavilion of Traditions, the Pavilion of Shamans, the Dionysian Pavilion, the Pavilion of Colors and the Pavilion of Time and Infinity.

  Giardini and Arsenale closed on Mondays (except May 15th, August 14th, September 4th, October 30th, and November 20th 2017)
• Opening hours
  Giardini from 10 am to 6 pm
  Arsenale from 10 am to 6 pm (from 10 am to 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays from  May 13th until September 30th)
• Tickets and prices: 
  Full regular ticket: Adults – € 25,00 per person.
  48-hour ticket: Adults – € 30,00 per person.
• The best way to avoid the queue at the ticket office is to get an online ticket. You may find all the details about the prices and purchase an online ticket on the official website.
• Services available at the exhibition venues: free cloakroom, info point, bar, restaurant, bookshop, changing tables for kids.
• Pets: Arsenale – not allowed; Giardini – small to medium-size pets on a leash are admitted to the green area.
• The exhibition is very big, therefore comfortable shoes are recommended.

Giardini

You can find the Gardens in the east part of Venice. They are absolutely beautiful and have been the venue for the Art Exhibition since 1895. For me it feels like completely different Venice in there – green, calm, artistic and inspiring. The Gardens host the Central Pavilion and further 29 national pavilions, built at various periods by the participating countries themselves. Countries not owning a pavilion in the Giardini are exhibited in other venues across Venice.

Arsenale

The Arsenale was found in the 12th century. By the 16th century it had become the greatest naval shipyard in the world, capable of constructing a whole galley in 24 hours, using an assembly line system! It is an important place for Venice, as well as for Biennale. The area in 50.000 square metres (25.000 of which of indoor space) of the South-East area of the Arsenale has become a platform for the Biennale activities. Usually, tourists can’t go inside the Arsenale, visiting require a special permission. Therefore, the art exhibition is a great opportunity not only enjoy art pieces, but also discover the power and energy of the ancient largest pre-industrial production centre of the world.

Good to know about THE 57TH INTERNATIONAL ART EXHIBITION:

• There are 120 invited artists from 51 countries; 103 of these are participating for the first time.
• The Exhibition also includes 86 National Participations in the historic Pavilions at the Giardini, at the Arsenale and in the historic city centre of Venice.
• 3 countries are participating for the first time: Antigua and Barbuda, Kiribati, Nigeria.

VIVA ARTE VIVA EXPLORES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ARTISTS AND THEIR EMOTIONS, BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR FEELINGS, BETWEEN THE HUMAN NATURE AND THE SURROUNDING WORLD.

My pick-ups at Giardini are Russian, American, Swiss, UK and Israeli Pavilions. At the Arsenale I can’t really specify, I liked different art pieces in different pavilions. Also, “must visit” during Biennale is an art project of Damien Hirst in Punta Della. His new exhibition “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” won’t leave anyone untouched.
